Protein Powders are an easy way to get protein in, especially if you have a busy lifestyle and are constantly on the move.  You can leave powder in your desk, your car, or your gym bag and don’t have to worry about it spoiling or going bad.  There are literally TONS out on the market and it can be overwhelming.  Some are loaded with sugar, low in protein, and provide as much nutrition as a milkshake.  So what are some of the key things to look for when shopping for a protein powder?

Look for Proteins to be listed at the beginning of a short ingredient list.

Whey, Casein, and Soy are proteins that you may often see.  Whey will digest quickly and Casein will digest slowly so you may want to choose a whey protein as a post workout supplement and casein may be better to have as your last meal of the day or before a fast as it will keep you feeling full longer.

The ingredients list should be short and have ingredients that you can pronounce.  Long lists and complex words usually mean “chemical poo”.

20 Grams of Protein or more

Protein powders are designed to supplement your diet with quick and easy protein.  Protein keeps you feeling full longer, aids muscle growth, balances your blood sugars, and can speed up your metabolism as it is harder to digest than carbohydrates and fats.  Shoot for 20+ grams of protein in each serving.

5 Grams or Less of Carbs

3 Grams or Less of Fat

Protein is the star of the show in protein powders.  Keep other macros to a minimum.  Again, protein powders are designed for convenient protein to help you hit your protein macro goals.  You could also hit your macros by having a filet of grilled fish or chicken breast at 3 PM but your boss may think you are crazy if you bring that into an important meeting with clients!
